What is the cause of a Ideal L2 fault?
An Ideal boiler triggers an L2 fault when it cannot ignite the gas or detect a flame. It is a very common Ideal fault.

No gas credit
The most common reason behind a L2 fault is running out of gas. This doesn’t apply to direct debit gas meters.
If you have run out of gas while using the boiler it will display an L2 fault.
The solution is to buy more gas credit and press the reset button.
Many gas meters lock out when credit runs out as a safety feature. Each meter has a different method of unlocking. It normally displays instructions on the screen if you press a button.

Faulty main PCB
Ideal boilers have a reputation for being reliable. However if the PCB develops a fault it can give an L2 fault. This is a rare situation so I would go for other parts first. A Gas Safe registered heating engineer must change the PCB, as it is an expensive part and is safety critical.
Faulty flue seals.
The flue of a modern condensing boiler has two pipes, one inside the other. The outer pipework carries clean air for combustion. The inner carries the products of combustion outside.
The seals can fail between the two pipes. This causes the clean air to be contaminated with products of combustion.
The boiler requires clean air to burn the gas properly. If the gas isn’t burning properly an L2 will be displayed.
Changing flue seals is for a qualified gas safe engineer. Do not attempt this yourself.
Blocked or Frozen condensate pipe
If the condensate pipe is blocked or frozen the boiler can fill with water. This stops the burning of gas causing an L2 fault.
Normally when the boiler is running the steam that come out the flue condenses inside the boiler. It then flows out the white pipe under the boiler to the drain.
A blocked or frozen condensate stops the water flowing away making it accumulate in the boiler.
The boiler will make a bubbling or gurgling sound when it tried to run. This is because it is full of water.
Blocked condensates are normally at the connection between the smaller overflow pipework and the main waste pipework in the property.
Frozen condensates are normally found on long external condensate pipes. Usually where the pipe goes into the drain.
Faulty ignition electrodes.
Very unlikely again as ideal electrodes are pretty reliable.
Faulty ignition transformer
The spark that lights the gas comes from an ignition transformer. (also known as the spark generator). It is quite a common fault on Ideal Logic boilers.
A gas safe engineer must diagnose and fit the ignition transformer.
Blocked flue.
Check the end of the flue to make sure nothing is blocking it. A bit unusual but easy to fix. If the flue is blocked then it must be unblocked then reset the boiler.
Faulty gas valve
A faulty gas valve can cause an L2 fault. This is one of the more common faults as Ideal gas valves are not very reliable.
A faulty gas valve will normally show itself with a loud grumbling/vibrating noise. This is most common when the heating has been on for a long time. A gas safe engineer must diagnose and fit the gas valve.
Faulty or Blocked Injector
The injector measure the exact amount of gas as it is blown into the boiler to burn.
If they get even slightly choked they can send an incorrect amount of gas into the boiler. This causes incorrect combustion and eventually an L2 fault.
A gas safe engineer must diagnose and fit the injector.
