What is the pressure on my Vaillant boiler?

How can I check the pressure on my Vaillant boiler?

Newer Vaillant ecotec boilers don’t have a traditional pressure gauge. They have a digital gauge shown on left side of the digital screen.

You can see the current pressure by pressing the top right button on the front of your boiler controls.

Why do I need to know the pressure?

Checking the pressure warns you of leaks and other faults related to your central heating system.

Most (not all) boiler will switch off and show a fault code if the pressure gets too low. Regularly checking your pressure can avoid losing your heating or hot water avoiding costly breakdowns and repairs.

What should the pressure be?

Vaillant recommend the pressure should be set between 1 bar and 1.5 bar.

How do I check the pressure?

Most boilers have a small pressure gauge to see the pressure. Modern Vaillant boilers don’t have a pressure gauge visible. You need to go through the menu to find the pressure.

Check it when it is cold

It’s perfectly normal for the boiler pressure to go up to 2.5 bar when it is hot. If the pressure is too high when you check it turn the heating off. Allow the radiators to cool to room temperature then check again.

Use the top right button.

The first press brings the digital screen to life.

The second press shows the temperature the heating is set at.

The third press displays the pressure in bar.

When the boiler is cold the pressure should be between 1 bar.

What do I do if the pressure is too low?

If it’s too low you have to use your filling loop to increase the pressure.

What do I do if the pressure is too high?

First thing to do is allow the radiator to cool. If it’s still too high when the radiators are cool you will need to reduce the pressure. This is normally from a drain or bleed point.

Why is my boiler pressure dropping

The boiler pressure dropping is one of the most common central heating faults.

It’s so common we have an entire page on it. Click on this link and you’ll go straight there.

Summary

  • Vaillant boilers will show an F22 fault if the pressure goes too low.
  • Some modern Vaillant boilers don’t have a pressure gauge.
  • Older Vaillant boilers have an almost meaningless pressure gauge.
  • You find the boiler pressure through the digital screen.
  • Try to keep the pressure at about 1 bar when the radiators are cold.
