Batteries in the wireless room stat

The batteries in a wireless room stat is one of the things I check when I’m servicing a boiler. A battery warning symbol can be easily missed by customers so it’s always worth checking.

If the batteries in the wireless room die the room stat will no longer work. This can mean either the heating doesn’t work or the heating becomes stuck on. It’s really easy to check without calling out a repair engineer.

It’s quite unusual to find a customer who even knows their thermostat takes batteries. They rarely check them before the winter starts.

How can I check the batteries in the wireless room stat?

You don’t need a multimeter or battery tester to check your batteries. If you see a symbol that looks like a battery it means the batteries aren’t going to last much longer.

This Neomitis room stat has the symbol in the top right corner.

How do I change the batteries in a wireless room stat?

The batteries are pretty well hidden under the top hatch.

Pop that hatch off and slide a couple of new AA batteries in there.

The little battery symbol disappears as soon as the batteries are changed.

Pop the cover back on and test the heating to make sure it reconnects.

How can I know it’s reconnected?

If the connection is lost the receiver will show a red light.

Turn the thermostat down to its lowest or highest temperature depending on how it is set. This should signal the receiver to change the red light to green or amber.

Now set the receiver to the opposite temperature. This will send another signal to the receiver and will cause the boiler to go on or off.

Reset the thermostat to its original position.

Summary

All done. One breakdown has been avoided when the customer goes to turn the heating on for the first time this year.

You can help yourself by checking the screen on your thermostat over the summer.

If the screen is blank you need to change the batteries.

A battery symbol means you need to change the batteries.

Has the link has been lost between the stat and the receiver?
